7 Best Things About the NEW ThreeShipsMedia.com

Just over a month ago I wrote The 2-Hour, 2-$20 Dollar Bill Website, a post detailing my ambitiously amateur attempts to get ThreeShipsMedia.com off the ground.  With nothing but a WordPress and a very patient, will-only-jump-in-if-I’m-about-to-blow-up-my-computer Web site guru on hand, I created what you saw at this URL.  At least until a few hours ago…

The WordPress treated us well, but as we recently welcomed several new members to the team we thought it appropriate to take that next step in website maturity.  Hence, what you see here: ThreeShipsMedia.com, v2.0.

And befitting any big announcement, here are a few of the things we initially love about the new site.

  1. Pictures.  You can actually see what we look like.  Yes – that is my real hair.  And yes, we do have a girl in the office.
  2. 3SM.com’s mysterious inability to show up on my screen right now – waiting for the old cache to clear…
  3. The fact that we almost launched it on yesterday (Columbus Day – Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria – Three Ships – “…NEW WORLD of emerging media” – etc.) but held off at risk of being too hokey.  Good call.
  4. Another opportunity to collaborate with our buddies over at New Media Campaigns.  Joel, Clay, and Kris – thanks for the great work, guys.
  5. Now our friends actually believe we’re not running a company out of our parent’s basement.
  6. No longer when we post links to Facebook will it say: “Three Ships Media - Just another WordPress weblog.”  That’s like hearing, “no you’re too short to ride the roller-coaster,” “But I still think you’re a really nice guy,” and “Thanks, but we’re going in another direction” all at once.  No more!
  7. The fact that we got this thing up and running just 48 hours before BlogWorld 2009.  Walking in there with a Wordpress is like bringing a ’94 Honda Accord to theBristol Motor Speedway (I know, I’ve done it…).  And I’m not trying to look stupid in front of guys like Brian Solis and Jalen Rose.

As always, would love to hear your thoughts, comments, criticisms, and praise for the new site.  (Now, on to brainstorming for v3.0)

I think you'll be surprised at Blogworld to see actually how many use Wordpress. Many of the biggest blogs in the blogosphere are using it. I may be wrong, but would be curious to see. So let me know!

Matt - Great point. Not ragging on Wordpress in general, by any means. And you're right - I asked around and a TON of people there operate that way. (And if it's good enough for Mark Cuban...) We transitioned because we needed certain qualities to a site - a password protected section, for instance - that we felt could be best served with a custom job by a company we know well in Carrboro, NC called New Media Campaigns. Thanks for the comments!
